Small 9mm Ruger - The Ruger American Compact adds another polymer-framed pistol option for today's shooter. In the near future, James will review the Ruger Compact without the thumb safety. It can be seen on TFBTV. The reason, of course, is that we want to present both models to our readers so that they not only have two perspectives, but also can evaluate the advantages of the model with the thumb safety and without the thumb safety. Both pistols are chambered for 9mm.
There has been some misunderstanding about the capability of this compact pistol so let me clear that up. The Ruger Compact comes with a flush-fit magazine that holds 12 rounds and the second magazine holds 17 rounds with an extension collar so that the longer magazine feels like an extended grip.

As mentioned, the thumb safety is positioned similar to the 1911 but requires a little less reach for manipulation. The thumb safety is ambidextrous as is the magazine release. The thumb safety has a relatively short throw, so it is easy to use depending on your hand size. Resting your hands above the safety is impractical due to the reach and size of the handle. Another accessory is to choose backstraps. The compact comes with a small, medium and large attachment. Using a small attachment allows the thumb safety to be used as you would a thumb safety on a 1911.

So, what do I like about the Accord? First, let me say that I love the thumb safety. I know many will disagree and in this case it's okay we all have our favourites. Even if you buy a thumb security model, it doesn't mean you have to use it and it won't change the price. Unlike the Glock at least, Ruger gave the consumer the option to have a manual safety or not. Both models have a rail for attaching a compact light or laser to the gun. While the trigger feels better than the Glock stock, it still has an unexpected break as the striker is released. It's not bad, you just need to get used to it. The shape of the trigger is what I really like. It is not as curved as many polymer guns. The curve is minimal which gives better feedback.
After stripping the gun and oils, I took it to the range on several occasions to fire a total of 500 rounds of Armscor ammo plus some new Creedmoor JHP rounds (more on this new ammo later). During testing, I didn't experience any crashes. It fires every type of ammo I have with no problem. I prefer the relatively straight back strap that you can only get if you use the small handle attachment. Using the medium to insert the hump it creates is a bit satisfying but I'm sure many will find it works just fine for them. I like the idea of incorporating a flush magazine into your second large-capacity type magazine for a full-size handgun.
While not a match gun, it is accurate in combat and will do the job well at social distances. Between its impressive reliability and excellent accuracy, this Ruger will get the job done without a doubt. She must instill confidence in her owner. As with any firearms training, practice and more practice!
MSRP is $579 which means the street price is closer to $500 - $525 or so. It sits firmly in the same price range as Glock and other polymer striker-fired pistols.

A while ago, I reviewed the full-size 9mm Ruger Security-9 pistol, and last week Ruger introduced its new compact Security-9 model. I appreciate the great performance and features of a full-sized pistol, so I wanted to try out their new compact short-barreled pistol for concealed carry. Are they great and will work for concealed carry? How does it measure up to my 10 criteria, especially its accuracy, reliability, and stealthiness? This is my review and field test of it.
First, I will present the specs and features of the new Ruger Security-9 Compact. Then I will compare its specs to some of the full-size handguns I have reviewed in the past, followed by a comparison of five similar guns on the market. The Ruger Security-9 Compact has the same “Secure-Action” hammer-firing system as the successful Ruger Security-9 and LCP II full-size pistol. The trigger is crisp, short and smooth and the gun uses an internal covered hammer, rather than a striker rod, which helps make racking easier to slide. This pistol has the well-proven features of the Security-Six pistol, representing excellent performance, excellent reliability, excellent value and ergonomics. It is not intended to be a revolutionary, uniquely designed semi-automatic pistol, but rather a pistol with consistent performance and a moderately priced, ergonomic fit that meets the basic requirements of concealed carry.
Ruger Ec9s 9mm Pistol
This weapon is not a striker-fired pistol, but instead has a "single-action" trigger with a double-action, pre-cocked hammer-operated system. This short, soft pre-cocked trigger reminds me of my own single-action guns, and I love that. Many would think of this as a single-action trigger because it is released softly while you finish pressing the trigger which cocks the hammer. For safety, the Ruger Security-9 has a trigger safety, ambidextrous thumb safety, and a recessed hammer grip that prevents the pistol from firing unless the trigger is depressed. It has a Browning slanted barrel lock. This solid value pistol has features typically found in more expensive pistols and doesn't feel “cheap.” The hammer, like the striker in striker-fired rifles, is lowered behind the slide-back action. Pulling the trigger completes the rotation of the hammer to fire the gun. This results in a one-of-a-kind trigger feel with a short, crisp reset point while this is a double-action pistol.
Below, I provide the full size and compact dimensions of the Security-9 and some comparison specs for a few other brand models with similar barrel lengths between just 3.39″ and 3.50″. The new Security-9 Compact ships with two 10-round, flush-mount magazines, but the 15-round mags that come with the full-size pistol can be used. Also includes a finger grip extension floor plate for added control. Extended 15-round mugs are available for purchase. Each of the pistols below has its own merits of personal preference.
Both the slide and barrel are made of hardened steel, which means that the steel is hardened on all surfaces during the manufacturing process, rather than just hardening the outer surface and keeping the inner surface relatively soft. In the annealing process, there is a high level of carbon added to the iron mixture. When the parts of the part are heated and annealed, all parts of the part are hardened and strengthened from the surface to the core. The goal is to extend the life of treated parts. The brushed steel slide is finished in a brushed chrome blue matte finish. The full-size, compact body is constructed of hard-anodized aluminum and includes full-length rails.
